Carer payments

If you are a parent, foster parent or grandparent with dependent children under the age of 16, you may get:

Family Tax Benefit

This is a tax benefit to help with the cost of raising children.

You might be able to get this payment if you care for a dependent child or secondary student (younger than 20 years of age) at least 35% of the time and meet an income test.

Parenting Payment

This is income support to help with the cost of raising children.

You might be able to get this payment if you are single and care for a child aged under 8 years, or if you and a partner care for a child aged under 6 years and meet an income and assets test.

Child Disability Assistance Payment

This is an annual payment to help with the cost of caring for a child with disability.

You might be able to get the payment if you get a Carer Allowance

Carer Adjustment Payment

This is a one-off payment to families who can’t get other income support when the family is going through significant adjustment because of the care needs of a child.

You might be able to get theispayment if you care for a child aged under 7 years who has recently been diagnosed with severe disability or a severe medical condition. You must get a Carer Allowance, not be able to get a Carer Payment or any other income support payment, have a strong need for financial support, and claim within 2 years of diagnosis.

Assistance for Isolated Children Scheme

This is a payment to help with the extra study costs for your children.

You might be able to get this payment if your children can’t go to a state or public school because they:

  • live in an isolated area
  • have disability
  • have special health needs
